A drawer organiser is only useful if it fits both the drawer and the things you want to keep in it. Before choosing one, spend a few minutes checking the usable space, the size of your items and how you will lift them out.
This guide works for a desk drawer, craft drawer or everyday odds-and-ends drawer. Start with what you already own, then compare options in our Home & Storage collection.
1. Empty the drawer and measure the inside
Use a tape measure or ruler and record everything in the same unit, such as millimetres. Measure the space an organiser can actually occupy, rather than the drawer front or the outside of the cabinet.
- Width: measure left to right inside the drawer. Check near the front and back if the sides taper.
- Depth: measure from the inside of the front panel to the inside of the back panel.
- Height: check the clearance available when the drawer closes, including anything that projects down from above. The side-panel height alone may not tell you this.
Note rounded corners, screws, runners or other obstructions. Use the smallest usable measurement where the shape varies.
2. Compare outside dimensions, not packaging size
Look for the organiser's actual outer width, depth and height. Include any rim, hinge, handle or closed lid that extends beyond the base. Packaging measurements describe the shipping pack and are not a substitute.
Cabinet-size labels can also differ from the item itself. For example, IKEA's UPPDATERA measurements distinguish a 60 cm frame width from the organiser's 55.4 cm width. Check the detailed measurements and compatibility notes rather than relying on a short product title.
Avoid planning a tight, edge-to-edge fit from rounded measurements. Allow room to place and remove the organiser, and follow any clearance guidance supplied with it.
3. Check the compartments against your belongings
An organiser may fit the drawer while its compartments are too small for your contents. Group the items first: long pens and scissors, small clips, craft pieces or other loose bits.
- Measure the longest item and the widest item in each group.
- Check the usable internal compartment size, not just the whole box.
- Allow space to grasp items without tipping everything out.
- Confirm whether dividers move; a photograph of partitions does not prove that they are removable.
Our Clear Compartment Organiser is listed as transparent, lidded small-parts storage with multiple compartments. Its overall dimensions, compartment count and divider arrangement are still awaiting confirmation, so do not assume it will fit your drawer from the photograph alone.
4. Try a paper layout before ordering
Cut paper rectangles to the proposed organisers' outer dimensions and place them in the empty drawer. This helps you compare side-by-side arrangements without buying several boxes first. A paper layout checks the footprint only; height and lid clearance still need separate checks.
Illustrative example: in a usable space 400 mm wide and 300 mm deep, two trays each 190 mm wide and 280 mm deep take up 380 mm by 280 mm side by side. That leaves 20 mm total in each direction before considering obstructions or extra clearance. These are example measurements, not specifications for a Save2Door product.
Your before-you-buy checklist
- I have recorded the smallest usable width, depth and closed-drawer clearance.
- I know the organiser's outer dimensions and the compartments' usable sizes.
- I have allowed for rims, lids, handles and lifting the organiser out.
- I have checked that my usual belongings fit the proposed layout.
If a measurement is missing, ask us to check it before ordering. Include the product link, your drawer measurements and the items you want to store so we know which details matter.
